Bhagwan Dada is famous for his community film Albela. He was born on 1ST Aug 1913. His fother was a cloth mill worker. In his early days he used to work as a labour. He managed to get some small roles in the silent films. Once he entered the studio he involved himself fully and learnt the art of film making. He became an expert in making films with a very marginal budget. For about 10 years he directed many low budget films. He used to portray himself as immature and simple man. He later owned Jagriti studio in chembur. And started his production companies by the name Jagriti Pics and Bhagwan Arts Production.
In 1951 the veteran producer Director Raj Kapoor advised him to make a social film Albela. He made the film with himself and Geeta Bali in it, music of the film was given by C.Ramchandra, many songs of that film were hits, ‘Shola Jo Bhadke’ being one of the famous one is still liked by people. After Albela another two movies were made with same star cast with Geeta Bali and C. Ramchandra, but both were flops. In the year 1956 he gave the lyrics writer Anand Bakshi a chance to write four songs for his film ‘Bhala Aadmi’, he even paid Rs.200/- for the work. Anand Bakshi’s name was included in the film credits list there was no looking back for the lyricists Anand Bakshi who went on from there and wrote more than 3500 songs.
Bhagwan could not generate more hit films after Bhala Aadmi and slowly had to drop production and directing films and only had to be satisfied doing small roles which came his way. He could not get worthwhile roles except the ones in ‘Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje’ and ‘Chori Chori’. He lost his property and made his living from a small chawl in dadar suburb of Bombay. He kept on doing small typical bhagawan style dancing in whatever films offered to him. Bhagwan died in 2002 when he was 89 years of age.
